Aline da Silva Cerqueira is a Brazilian marine biologist and current PhD student at King's College London's Department of Geography, jointly affiliated with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Institute of Zoology. She is part of the London NERC Doctoral Training Partnership Programme (Cohort 4), fully funded by NERC/UKRI.
- Education:
- PhD in Geography (in progress), King's College London & ZSL Institute of Zoology
- MSc in Marine Biology, Universidade Federal Fluminense (2004)
- Licentiate Teaching Degree in Biological Sciences, Federal University of Ceará (1999)
- BSc in Biological Sciences, Federal University of Ceará (1999)
Her research focuses on marine ecology and conservation using biologging technology and non-invasive monitoring methods, with a particular emphasis on seabird soundscapes and foraging behavior at sea. She leads the Seabird Soundscapes citizen science project and explores how marine protected areas can act as climate change mitigation tools. Aline also co-founded AQUASIS, a Brazilian NGO dedicated to endangered species conservation, and contributes to the Decade of Ocean Scientists Network and the Women's League for the Ocean.
Key research areas include:
- Marine conservation and ecology
- Biologging and GPS tracking
- Marine policy and climate change adaptation
- Environmental heterogeneity and community structure
- Marine protected areas as nature-based solutions
Her work spans multiple ecosystems, from tropical oceans to coastal mangroves, with a focus on anthropogenic impacts and species distribution modeling.
Professional networks and initiatives:
- Co-founder of AQUASIS
- Research partner with AQUASIS' Marine Mammals Program
- Member of the Women's League for the Ocean
- Collaborator in the Decade of Ocean Scientists Network
- Involved in environmental education and ethnoecology research
