Professor Mairi Knight holds the position of Professor of Evolutionary Ecology at the School of Biological and Marine Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, University of Plymouth. Her research focuses on evolutionary and ecological processes shaping biodiversity, with applications in conservation science and molecular techniques. Key areas include reproductive isolation, gene flow, dispersal patterns, and species delineation, particularly in declining populations. She specializes in bee systems (honeybees and bumblebees) and has contributed to studies on amphibians, seabirds, and Lake Malawi cichlids.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on evolutionary genetics, conservation biology, small population biology, and field biology. She leads field courses in Spain and Kenya, emphasizing practical ecological training. Professor Knight has supervised over ten PhD/MSc students, focusing on topics like local adaptation in black honeybees, heathland restoration, amphibian disease ecology, and conservation genetics of endangered species.
Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, addressing biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecosystems. Collaborations span institutions globally, including the Natural History Museum, ZSL London, and international universities. Despite no listed scientific awards, her extensive contributions to conservation science and molecular ecology reflect significant scholarly impact.
