Aline Telle is an Associate Researcher at the University of Geneva's Institute for Environmental Sciences (ISE), working from office A301. She holds a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Geneva and has academic affiliations with UNIGE's UNESCO Chair on Hydropolitics.
Dr. Telle earned her Ph.D. in Law from the University of Geneva where she also assisted in teaching four courses at the Institute for Environmental Sciences. Prior to her academic career, she worked in energy sector consultancy on projects across China, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, focusing on industry development, training, and compliance gap analysis for large power plant construction.
Her research focuses on freshwater governance systems with particular expertise in environmental politics and international water law. Dr. Telle investigates how international water law is implemented in Least-Developed Countries that are members of international river basin organizations, examining the interactions between national governments and river basin commissions. Her work challenges conventional river basin governance models, arguing for context-specific approaches and bottom-up implementations to address institutional misfits.
Dr. Telle's publications demonstrate consistent focus on Mekong River governance, particularly examining hydropower development in Lao PDR and practical applications of hydropolitics in the Lower Mekong Basin. Her research connects international legal frameworks with practical implementation challenges in transboundary water management.
Dr. Telle conducted her doctoral research under the supervision of Professor Makane Mbengue and Professor Christian Bréthaut, with her work associated with UNIGE's UNESCO Chair on Hydropolitics. She has presented her research at the Summer School in Water Governance organized by the Geneva Water Hub.
Her professional background combines academic research with practical experience in the energy sector, providing her with unique insights into policy implementation challenges across different governance levels. Dr. Telle's work centers on the Institute for Environmental Sciences at the University of Geneva, where she continues to contribute to research on water governance and environmental law.
