Dr. Aline Potiron is a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University's History and Philosophy of Science department within the Faculty of Science, based at the Freudenthal Institute. Her work uniquely integrates microbiology practice with philosophical inquiry, focusing on microbial ecology and microbiome research through a practice-oriented methodology that challenges existing frameworks in data representation, diversity measurement, and causality.
Her current research investigates the interplay of race in biological sciences as part of the "Microbiome research and race in the ‘Local South’" project led by Abigail Nieves Delgado, aiming to develop anti-racist solutions for practitioners in Latin America. This builds on her foundational background in laboratory microbiology, where she applied hands-on microbial community experience to philosophical problems.
Recent publications reveal a clear trend toward rethinking conceptual tools in microbiome philosophy, emphasizing model-based diversity measurement (2025) and relational data frameworks (2024). These works demonstrate how biological practice informs philosophical theory, particularly in addressing epistemic challenges in contemporary life sciences research.
Dr. Potiron actively disseminates findings through international conferences including ISME-Lat 2025 (August 7, 2025) and ISHPSSB Porto (July 22, 2025), while contributing to academic education through the "Dilemmas of the scientist workshop 1". She collaborates within the Freudenthal Institute and the project team focused on microbiome and race research in the Global South.
