Alida Merlo is a Distinguished University Professor and Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), affiliated with the College of Health and Human Services. She specializes in juvenile justice policy, trauma-informed education, and the intersection of media and criminal justice policy. Merlo has been recognized nationally for her research and teaching, including the 2020–21 Distinguished University Professor Award.

Research & Mentoring: Merlo’s work focuses on reforming juvenile justice systems and advocating for trauma-informed approaches. She has mentored over 21 graduate students (chairing 9 dissertations) and received awards for mentorship, including the 2010 Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Outstanding Mentor Award. Her publications include 31 journal articles, 22 book chapters, and co-authored books on juvenile justice transformation.
