Alicia Walf is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cognitive Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). Her research explores individual differences in stress responses, focusing on hormonal mechanisms (particularly estradiol and neurosteroids) and their interactions with brain, body, and mind. She employs cross-species and cross-disciplinary approaches, integrating neuroscience with architecture, art, and technology.
- Education: B.A. in Psychology and East Asian Studies from SUNY Albany, Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience from SUNY Albany
Her research spans neuroendocrinology, stress biology, and brain health, with projects on:
- Estradiol’s role in brain plasticity via ERbeta
- Rapid hormonal effects on behavior and vice versa
- Contemplative practices for stress and creativity
- Architecture/art’s impact on cognitive performance
- Olfactory deficits as Alzheimer’s risk factors
Recent publications highlight hormonal effects on cognition, neurosteroid synthesis, and interdisciplinary applications. She has received competitive awards including the Luciano Martini Prize and DoD grant for neuroendocrine research.
- Scientific Recognition:
- HASS Excellence in Teaching Award (2022)
- Suzannah Bliss Tieman Research Award (2012)
- Lifetime travel awards to conferences (2008–2021)
Dr. Walf integrates trauma-informed and social justice pedagogies in courses like Stress and the Brain and Well-being: Creating a Toolbox. She mentors undergraduate researchers and leads grants combining neuroscience with technology and design.
