Alicia Smith-Tran is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Comparative American Studies at Oberlin College. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Case Western Reserve University (2018) and a BA from Oberlin College (2010). Her research focuses on medical sociology, aging, race, class, gender, and the sociology of sport. She employs narrative methods like autoethnography and photovoice to explore topics such as Black women’s experiences with ageism, pandemic pregnancy, and recreational running communities.
Key awards include the Kimberlé Crenshaw Outstanding Article Award (2024) and a Mellon Foundation-funded Career Enhancement Fellowship (2021). She has published in journals like Contexts, Sociological Perspectives, and Journal of Autoethnography. Smith-Tran is also the Faculty Athletics Representative to the NCAA for Oberlin College and serves on editorial boards for Journal of Elder Policy and Contexts.
