Dr. Alicia Partnoy is a Professor at Loyola Marymount University’s Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, renowned for her poetry, human rights advocacy, and teaching. A survivor of Argentina’s political turmoil, she chronicled her experiences in The Little School: Tales of Disappearance and Survival, which was pivotal in Argentina’s genocide trials. Her interdisciplinary approach to education, inspired by Paulo Freire, emphasizes student creativity and critical engagement with historical context.
Teaching includes courses like Latin American Poetry, Hispanic Cultural Studies, and Latin American Short Stories. She incorporates real-world issues, such as immigrant narratives from local prisons, into her curriculum. Partnoy advises LMU’s Spanish journal La Voz, where student works from her classes are published. Her poetry collections, including Revenge of the Apple, have gained international acclaim, displayed in subway art and performed by groups like Sweet Honey in the Rock.
Her activism extends beyond academia: she served as Vice-Chair of Amnesty International and on the Board of Directors of PEN-West. Her work intertwines art, education, and social justice, reflecting a lifelong commitment to equity and human rights.
