Alicia Durán is a Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), leading the GlaSS Research Group at the Ceramics and Glass Institute (ICV-CSIC). She holds a Physics degree from the University Nacional de Córdoba (1974) and a PhD in Physics from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1984). Her work focuses on designing sustainable glass and glass-ceramic materials for energy, photonics, and corrosion protection, addressing global challenges like energy efficiency and emissions reduction.
- President of the International Commission on Glass (ICG)
- Guest Professor at Wuhan University of Technology, China
- Correspondent researcher at CONICET (Argentina)
Research interests span glass science, sol-gel materials, and nanostructured transparent ceramics, with applications in photovoltaics, biodegradable implants, and eco-friendly coatings. Key awards include the Vittorio Gottardi Award (1988) and the Phoenix Award 2019 (Glass Person of the Year).
Her group develops advanced materials for energy-saving glass applications, corrosion-resistant coatings, and photonic devices. Notable publications include studies on oxyfluoride glass-ceramics and self-healing coatings. She actively promotes international collaboration and science communication, contributing to initiatives like the United Nations International Year of Glass (2022).
