Alicia B. Ríos is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at Syracuse University. Her research focuses on 19th-century Latin American literature, cultural theory, and contemporary representations of Venezuela’s War of Independence. She holds a Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese from the University of Maryland (1992), an M.A. from the same institution (1984), and a Licenciatura en Letras from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (1981).
Her major publications include Nacionalismos banales: el culto a Bolívar (2013) and co-editing The Latin American Cultural Studies Reader (2004). Current research examines race and war narratives in literature and film.
Dr. Ríos has served as Book Review Editor for Symposium: A Quarterly Journal in Modern Literatures, Graduate Advisor in her department, and committee member for organizations like the Modern Language Association. She has organized panels at ACLA and LASA, focusing on war representation and cultural memory.
Teaching specialties include Latin American literature, cultural theory, and border studies, with recent courses like Cinema & War in Latin America and Border Culture.
