Sophie Esch is an Associate Professor at Rice University, directing the Center of Latin American and Latinx Studies. Her work focuses on the intersection of literature, politics, war, and environment in Latin America and Africa. She specializes in Mexican, Central American, and Luso-African literature, with notable publications like Modernity at Gunpoint (2018) and Letra y metralla (2022). Her current project explores creaturely narratives of Cold War revolutions in Latin America and Africa. She holds affiliations with Politics, Law & Social Thought and the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality.
Education: PhD in Spanish and Portuguese from Tulane University. Teaching areas include animal studies, environmental humanities, and global South literatures.
Research interests span war narratives, postcolonial ecocriticism, and South-South literary exchanges. Her work has been supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
