Alice Sverdlik is a Lecturer in Urban Development Planning at the University of Manchester, contributing to postgraduate modules in urban development, climate resilience, and qualitative research. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and master’s degrees from University College London and the London School of Economics.
Her research focuses on urban health, informal settlements, and climate adaptation in the Global South. She collaborates with grassroots organizations such as Slum Dwellers International (SDI) and led projects on health equity in African cities, climate risks for informal workers, and pandemic responses. Notable roles include Co-Investigator for an ESRC/NFRF project on climate action and health equity in Bulawayo, Freetown, and Kampala, and Research Manager for an NIHR-funded study on occupational health in India and Zimbabwe.
Her work emphasizes participatory approaches and policy advocacy, with contributions to the African Cities Research Consortium and the Development Studies Association's Urbanisation Study Group. She has produced policy outputs for UN-Habitat and C40, leveraging over a decade of experience in global urban development research.
Grants and collaborations include ESRC, NIHR, DFID, and the British Academy. She advises on transformative urban recovery and equity, with a focus on gender and intersectionality. Her research outputs span 17 peer-reviewed articles and reports, addressing climate justice, informal livelihoods, and pandemic responses in African and South Asian contexts.
