Alice Panepinto is a Reader at the School of Law, Queen's University Belfast, where she joined as a Lecturer in 2017, advanced to Senior Lecturer in 2021, and currently holds her present position. She is an internationally recognized scholar specializing in international law with particular expertise in human rights, humanitarian law, and transitional justice within Muslim majority legal systems and the Middle East context, especially Palestine.
Her educational background includes a PhD in law and Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from Durham University, an LLM from SOAS, and a law degree from Turin University. Prior to Queen's, she worked at Warwick University and engaged in human rights work in the Middle East outside academia. Panepinto is half-English and half-Italian, bringing a unique perspective to her international legal scholarship.
Panepinto's research program demonstrates remarkable consistency and impact, focusing on international legal frameworks as they apply to Palestine and Muslim majority contexts. Her 2022 monograph Truth and Transitional Justice: Localising the International Legal Framework in Muslim Majority Legal Systems (Hart) established her as a leading voice on the intersection of Islamic law and international transitional justice mechanisms. Her current research examines the humanitarian impact of forcible transfer of Palestinian Bedouin communities in E1, Jerusalem, with findings published in the 2025 edited volume Ending Impunity for International Law Violations: Palestinian Bedouins and the Risk of Forced Displacement. The documentary film We Will Remain, produced through her AHRC follow-on funding, has achieved international recognition at film festivals worldwide.
Her recent publications (2023-2025) reveal a sophisticated scholarly trajectory examining property law in postcolonial contexts, international humanitarian law in occupied territories, and global governance structures affecting Palestinian self-determination. These works consistently bridge theoretical legal scholarship with practical human rights advocacy, particularly regarding Palestinian communities.
