Alice Lovejoy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota, where she also serves as Director of the Center for Austrian Studies. Her work bridges film studies, cultural history, and environmental humanities, with a focus on Central and Eastern European cinema, avant-garde film, and the material history of film stock.
Her research interests include media history, the intersection of military and film industries, Cold War documentary movements, and ecological themes in Eastern European visual culture. She explores how political, industrial, and environmental forces shape cinematic production and aesthetics, particularly in socialist and post-socialist contexts.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend toward interdisciplinary scholarship that combines archival research with material and environmental analysis. Themes such as 'militant chemistry,' nonflammable film stock, and ecological degradation in film point to a deep engagement with both the physical and ideological dimensions of cinema. Her work often centers on Czech and East German film, as well as transnational documentary networks.
