Alice Crary is a University Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at The New School for Social Research, with affiliations at Regent’s Park College, University of Oxford. Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh and roles such as Chair of Philosophy at The New School (2014–2017) and Visiting Fellowships at All Souls College, Oxford. Her research bridges moral philosophy, critical theory, animal studies, and Wittgensteinian thought.
Education: PhD in Philosophy (University of Pittsburgh, 1999), AB in Philosophy (Harvard, 1990). Notable works include *Animal Crisis* (2022), *Inside Ethics* (2016), and *Beyond Moral Judgment* (2007). Current projects focus on dehumanization, critical animal studies, and Wittgenstein’s political thought.
Research interests span ethics, social philosophy, critical disability studies, and feminist philosophy. She co-founded the Graduate Certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies and the Social Philosophy Prize. Active in academic communities, she runs the New York Wittgenstein Workshop and advises initiatives like *opp* (Oxford Public Philosophy).
Her writings critique positivist ethics, advocate for methodological pluralism, and explore intersections of morality with literature, art, and social justice. Recent curatorial work includes the 2023 Climate Crisis Summer Institute.
