Ali Habashi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cinematic Arts at the University of Miami’s School of Communication. An award-winning filmmaker and educator, he has led cross-disciplinary media projects addressing global challenges such as climate resilience, marine conservation, and healthcare disparities for over 25 years. His work has secured $3M+ in grants and been featured in CBS4, Miami Herald, and international television networks including Discovery, Canal+, and CNN Türk.
Research and Projects
- Ocean Health Voyage: Recognized with PIEoneer Awards 2021, this immersive educational platform explores marine biodiversity, climate change impacts, and sustainable resource management through collaborations with global marine biologists.
- Correspondence: A pandemic-era feature-length film co-produced with Fudan University students, combining narrative storytelling and international virtual collaboration.
- One Water: Award-winning documentary on global water systems, premiered at the Miami International Film Festival (2008).
- The Silver Mirror: Investigates aging in the 21st century, debuted at WHO headquarters (2013).
Teaching and Pedagogy
Habashi teaches advanced narrative film production, cinematography, and a globally networked documentary course on “Global Issues and Filmmaking” using Harkness methodology. During the pandemic, he pioneered the first COVID-19 Rapid Response Short Film Festival with student films from China, France, Spain, and the U.S.
