Ali H. Dogru is the Herman Brown Chair of Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Southern Methodist University’s Lyle School of Engineering, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. He is also a member of the US National Academy of Engineering and has held prestigious roles at MIT, Caltech, UT Austin, and other leading institutions worldwide.
Education:
- M.Sc. & B.Sc. combined, Istanbul Technical University
- Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering with minor in Applied Mathematics, The University of Texas at Austin
Research Interests:
His research spans large-scale simulation and high-performance computing, with a strong emphasis on energy and environmental applications. He leads investigations into CO₂ sequestration, geothermal system modeling, and hydrogen storage. His work also encompasses multiphase flow in porous media, mathematical modeling of complex fluid mixtures, and numerical solutions of coupled PDEs involving heat and mass transport.
His recent publications reflect a convergence of traditional petroleum engineering with modern computational techniques, including machine learning-enhanced phase behavior prediction and parallel reservoir simulation methods.
Scientific Awards & Honors:
- Member, US National Academy of Engineering
- Honorary Member Award
- Distinguished Member Award
- John Franklin Carll Award
- Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award (SPE)
- World Oil Innovative Thinker Award
- Best Technology Award (ADIPEC)
- Holder of over 25 US Patents
Industry & Academic Collaborations:
Before academia, Dogru spent 28 years at Saudi Aramco, 14 at Mobil/ExxonMobil R&D, and held roles at Core Labs and other engineering firms. He has been affiliated with MIT since 2011 and was named MIT ERL Fellow in 2018. He has also taught or conducted research at Caltech, UT Austin, UT Dallas, Norwegian Institute of Technology, and Istanbul Technical University.
