Ali Alalou is an Associate Professor of French and Applied Linguistics at the University of Delaware's Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures, housed within the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in French Linguistics from the University of California, Davis, and certificates in pedagogy from institutions in France. His research focuses on Afro-Asiatic linguistics, particularly Tamazight (Berber), North African sociolinguistics, and language policy in Morocco. He has authored award-winning children's literature, such as the co-authored The Butter Man, and is completing a book on Morocco's linguistic landscape under contract with Lexington Books.
Dr. Alalou's academic roles include serving as sequence supervisor for the French program and coordinator of World Language Education at UD. He is actively involved in professional organizations like the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) and the Delaware Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (DECTFL). His teaching spans French language pedagogy, Arabic culture, and linguistics.
Research Interests: His work critically examines colonial and postcolonial language policies in Morocco, the sociopolitical marginalization of Tamazight speakers, and the interplay between language and identity in North Africa. Recent projects explore emergency remote teaching during the pandemic and the role of Tamazight in contemporary Morocco's cultural landscape.

Advising & Service: Dr. Alalou advises on language program curricula and has contributed to initiatives like the Delaware Teachers Program. His leadership includes overseeing language proficiency testing and study abroad scholarships.
