Alfredo Paloyo

Alfredo Paloyo is an Associate Professor and Discipline Leader (Department Chair) of Economics at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He holds affiliations with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course, IZA Institute of Labor Economics, RWI Leibniz Institute, and Tax and Transfer Policy Institute. His work focuses on empirical analysis of human capital, labor markets, health economics, and education policy. He previously worked at RWI Leibniz Institute in Germany and taught at Ruhr University Bochum, University of Paderborn, University of the Philippines, and De La Salle University.

Education: BSc (2002, cum laude) and MA (2005) in Economics from University of the Philippines; European Master in Law and Economics (LL.M., 2007, highest distinction) from Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Hamburg, and University of Bologna; PhD (2011, summa cum laude) in Economics from Ruhr University Bochum.

Research interests include migration and health, intergenerational transmission of health, labor market dynamics, and policy evaluation. Recent studies address pandemic mental health impacts, peer effects in education, and economic recovery strategies in developing countries.

Awards include the Vice Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence (2019), RWI Best Dissertation (2012), and Best Thesis in European Master in Law and Economics (2007). He leads grants on intergenerational health transmission (2023) and evidence-based policy integration (2024). Current PhD supervision topics include earnings inequality, educational pairings in Vietnam, and leadership's impact on wellbeing.

He is actively involved in academic service, including organizing the Australian Gender Economics Workshop (2025) and hosting policy lectures on inequality. His research bridges theory and practice, influencing public policy in areas like healthcare access and labor market reform.
