Alfonso Muñoz González is a Full Professor of Condensed Matter and Computational Physics at the University of La Laguna (Spain). He holds a Ph.D. from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1986), focusing on electronic properties of surfaces and interfaces. His research spans over 30 years in high-pressure physics, with emphasis on ab initio simulations of materials under extreme conditions. He is a core member of the ELSimMat research group (Estructura Electrónica y Simulaciones ab initio de Materiales) and the MALTA Consolider Team. He has served as President of the European High Pressure Research Group (EHPRG) from 2019–2022 and currently holds roles in IUPAP's C20 Commission and the AIRAPT Executive Committee.
His research interests include structural, electronic, and dynamical properties of materials under compression, with a focus on computational methods (ab initio calculations) and experimental techniques like XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Key areas of study involve topological insulators, transition metal oxides, and pressure-driven phase transitions in inorganic compounds.
Recent publications highlight advancements in understanding multicenter bonding mechanisms, luminescent manometry systems, and high-pressure stability of novel materials. His work bridges theoretical predictions with experimental validation, contributing to both fundamental physics and applied materials science.
Alfonso has been actively involved in international scientific organizations, including EHPRG and AIRAPT, demonstrating leadership in the global high-pressure physics community.
