Alexandra Teodósio

Alexandra Teodósio is a Full Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of the Algarve (UAlg) and serves as Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Sustainable Development. She leads the Ecology and restoration of riverine, estuarine and coastal habitats research group (Ecoreach) at CCMAR. Her roles include coordinating the Consortium of Marine Sciences Schools (funding PhD scholarships for Portuguese-speaking countries) and co-directing the CoLAB in Sustainable and Smart Aquaculture. She previously served as Deputy Director at CCMAR and contributes to the European University of The Seas (SEA-EU).

Her research focuses on aquatic ecosystems, invasive species, fisheries sustainability, and citizen science applications. Key areas include estuarine ecology, marine conservation, and climate change impacts. Notable initiatives include monitoring invasive species via citizen science and evaluating management strategies for gender equality in academia. She also addresses socio-economic challenges in small-scale fisheries and ecological restoration projects in Angola and Mozambique.

Research Interests

Teodósio’s work integrates ecological, socio-economic, and policy dimensions. She investigates invasive species mechanisms (e.g., Callinectes sapidus expansion), sustainable harvesting practices for species like Carcinus maenas, and the role of fishing gears in estuarine ecosystems. Her projects also explore ecohydrology for coastal restoration in Luanda Bay, Angola, and assess climate vulnerability of Portuguese fisheries. Citizen science frameworks are central to her efforts in monitoring marine biodiversity and public engagement.

Grants & Collaborations

Leads projects under the LIFE INVASAQUA initiative (aquatic invasive species lists) and coordinates international partnerships through SEA-EU. Engages in policy-oriented research, including gender equity in higher education and work-life balance policies.
