Dr. Alexandra Sherlock is a Lecturer in the School of Fashion and Textiles at RMIT University, part of the College of Design and Social Context. She represents academic staff on RMIT’s Academic Board. Her research intersects sociology, anthropology, and fashion theory, using footwear as a lens to explore relationships between bodies, cultures, societies, and the environment. Notably, her doctoral work examined Clarks Originals to analyze fashion representations and embodied experiences. In 2021, she founded the Footwear Research Network to advance academic inquiries and industry collaboration. She advocates for critical thinking in higher education, emphasizing fashion’s role in addressing social, environmental, and cultural challenges. Her teaching blends theory and practice, promoting sustainable design pedagogy and integrating indigenous knowledge systems into education.
Her recent projects include exploring circular economy design and decolonizing curriculum approaches. She supervises PhD/Master’s research on topics like fashion localism, sensory fashion for blindness, and challenging racial/sexual hegemonies through clothing. She collaborates with organizations like the Global Footwear Future Coalition and maintains an active academic portfolio, including media engagements and industry projects.
