Alexandra Gubina

Alexandra Gubina is a Post-Doc Research Associate at the Pragmatics Department of the Leibniz Institute for the German Language in Mannheim. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Mannheim (2022) and has conducted research at institutions including the University of Waterloo (Canada), University of Colorado Boulder (USA), and Aarhus University (Denmark). Her work focuses on conversation analysis, interactional linguistics, and the grammar of spoken German, with a particular interest in modal verb formats and multimodal interaction. She has been recognized with the Peter-Roschy-Preis (2023) and Dissertation Förderpreis (2020).

Education: B.A. (2014) and M.A. (2017) in German and English Linguistics from Kharkiv National University and University of Heidelberg. Doctoral research (2018–2022) explored linguistic resources for social action in German conversation. She has held visiting positions at the University of Münster (2024) and University of Greifswald (2022–2023).

Her research interests include action formation/ascription, embodied interaction, and second language interactional competence. She co-edits the Encyclopedia of Terminology for Conversation Analysis and organizes international workshops on topics like uncooperative interaction and responsive behavior. Recent projects involve analyzing smartphone-mediated language tandems and interactional histories in L2 learning.

Key publications address topics like 'doch' as interactional counter, shoulder lifts in German discourse, and request formats in multilingual contexts. Teaching includes courses on syntax, pragmatics, and field research methods at universities in Germany and internationally.
