Dr. Alexandra Gibbs is an EPSRC Early Career Fellow and Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews, School of Chemistry. She holds a MPhys (2008) and PhD (2013) from St Andrews, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Tokyo, RIKEN, and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research. She was an Instrument Scientist at ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (2016–2020) before returning to St Andrews in 2020.
Her research focuses on the interplay between crystal structure and physical properties in quantum and functional materials, including low-dimensional magnets, spin-orbit coupled systems, correlated metals, ferroelectrics, and materials with novel phase transitions. Techniques employed include neutron scattering, targeted material synthesis, and in-situ measurements under magnetic fields and pressure.
Publications highlight contributions to understanding pyrochlore lattices, negative thermal expansion, Dirac/Weyl fermions, and superconductivity. She leads the Gibbs Lab, supervising PhD students and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. Awards include the prestigious EPSRC Early Career Fellowship.
