Alexandra Filindra is a Professor of Political Science and Psychology at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her scholarly work bridges American gun politics, immigration policy, race and ethnic politics, political psychology, and public opinion. She holds a PhD from Rutgers University and completed postdoctoral research at Brown University.
Her research has been supported by prestigious grants from the Pew Center for the States, Russell Sage Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Swiss National Science Foundation. She has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles in journals like the Journal of Politics, Political Behavior, and Policy Studies Journal.
Dr. Filindra’s recent work explores how racial resentment, sexism, and economic anxieties shape attitudes toward gun control and immigration. Her empirical focus includes state-level policy analysis, experiments on threat perception, and policy feedback effects.
She has received multiple accolades, including three Best Paper Awards from the American Political Science Association and the Lucius Barker Award from the Midwest Political Science Association. She is also completing a book on gun politics titled Race, Rights, and Rifles (University of Chicago Press, 2023) and a second co-authored book with Noah Kaplan under contract with New York University Press.
