Dr. Artiles's research spans several interconnected areas of political science. Her work examines how governmental structures and policies affect representation and outcomes at various levels of government. She has particular expertise in municipal politics, especially in Canadian contexts, where she investigates ideological dimensions of local governance. Her research on federalism explores the dynamics between state and local governments, particularly during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. In education policy, she examines the relationship between charter schools and traditional public schools. Gender politics forms another significant strand of her work, with studies on women's representation in municipal government and historical analyses of gender, race, and military service.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on empirical political analysis using diverse methodologies. She employs experimental approaches to study municipal politics in Canada, qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze intergovernmental relations during the pandemic, and comparative case studies to examine charter school effects. Her work consistently bridges theoretical political science with practical policy implications, often focusing on under-studied aspects of subnational governance.
Dr. Artiles has been recognized with a Fulbright Scholarship for her research at the University of Ottawa during the 2022-23 academic year, highlighting the international significance of her work.
She teaches courses in the subfields of public policy and American politics at Boise State University. Her research has gained significant attention, with multiple publications picked up by news outlets, shared on social media, and referenced in policy discussions, particularly her work on charter schools and municipal governance.
