Alexander Zhang is an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Texas School of Law. His research focuses on American legal history, statutory interpretation, and issues of inequality in the legal system. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School, an M.Phil. in History, and a B.A.-M.A. in American Studies (magna cum laude) from Yale University, where he is also a Ph.D. candidate in History. His work bridges legal theory with historical analysis, emphasizing marginalized voices in legal processes.

Research highlights include theories of statutory interpretation, legislative self-interpretation, and fairness in legal notice doctrines. Awards include the John Addison Porter Prize (Yale's top thesis award) and multiple Emerson Prizes for legislation scholarship.
Teaching: Courses on legislation, statutory interpretation, contracts, and race and law. Professional experience includes judicial clerkship at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and roles with Public Counsel, California AG’s Office, and San Francisco City Attorney’s Office. His work addresses systemic inequities through legal history and institutional critique.
