Dr. Alexander Whitelaw is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health & Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow, with a primary affiliation to the Department of Social & Environmental Sustainability. He holds an additional associate role within the School of Health & Wellbeing. With a 25-year track record in public health policy, he transitioned from teaching to public health roles, including research at NHS Health Scotland and academic positions at institutions like Manchester Metropolitan University and St Martin's College. His current role since 2002 involves lecturing in Health and Social Policy, leading the MA (Hons) Health and Social Policy program, and teaching courses such as Public Sector Systems Management and Enquiry Project in Health & Social Policy.
Research interests include public health policy, implementation of healthy policies, settings-based approaches, and discourse-based policy research. Notable projects include evaluations of palliative care provision, physical activity promotion strategies, and community engagement in mental health policy. Whitelaw has contributed to over 39 publications since 2008, focusing on palliative care, public health interventions, and health systems sustainability. His work often bridges policy analysis with practical implementation, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement.
Grants include leadership roles in the Arts Programme (EU/Scottish Government £131k, Holywood Trust £50k) and evaluations of projects like the Glasgow MCISS and MacMillan Cancer Support Services. He actively supervises PhD students exploring topics such as asset-based health approaches and end-of-life care perspectives. Whitelaw is a member of the Glasgow End of Life Studies Group, the Crichton Institute, and serves on editorial boards for journals like Critical Public Health.
Teaching responsibilities include convening courses on Health and Social Policy, Public Sector Systems Management, and Enquiry Projects. His contributions extend to university committees, including roles in the Athena Swan Charter and quality assurance.
