Alexander W. Cappelen is a Professor of Economics at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) since 2006. He holds key roles as Deputy Director of the Centre of Excellence FAIR, co-director of The Choice Lab, and Chairman of the Centre for Ethics and Economics. His research focuses on behavioral, experimental, and public economics, with emphasis on fairness, distributive justice, and social preferences. He earned his PhD in 2000 from NHH with a dissertation on 'Redistribution in a Divided World.'
His work explores topics such as inequality acceptance, meritocracy, and experimental validation of economic theories. Notable contributions include studies on global fairness norms, the impact of early childhood education on social preferences, and the behavioral underpinnings of solidarity during crises. Cappelen has been honored as a Distinguished Teacher (Merritert underviser) since 2022.
