Alexander Varchenko is the Ernest Eliel Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research spans multiple areas of mathematical physics and pure mathematics, with significant contributions to algebraic geometry, representation theory, and special functions. He has maintained an active research program for over five decades, with publications continuing through 2024.
Dr. Varchenko received his Doctor of Science degree from Moscow State University in 1982, following his Ph.D. in 1974 under the supervision of the renowned mathematician V.I. Arnold. His early work focused on singularity theory, which culminated in the influential two-volume work 'Singularities of Differentiable Maps' co-authored with Arnold and Gusein-Zade. His research interests encompass Mathematical Physics, Algebraic Geometry, Topology, Representation Theory, Combinatorics, Number Theory, and Complex Analysis.
Varchenko's research trajectory shows a remarkable evolution from classical singularity theory to modern applications in quantum algebra and mathematical physics. His work on hypergeometric functions and their connections to representation theory has been particularly influential, with his 1995 monograph 'Multidimensional Hypergeometric Functions and Representation Theory of Lie Algebras and Quantum Groups' serving as a standard reference. More recently, his research has focused on $p$-adic aspects of differential equations, modular arithmetic solutions, and connections to quantum integrable systems.
Among his notable honors are the Moscow Mathematical Society Prize (1973), multiple NSF grants spanning three decades, the Clay Mathematics Institute Book Fellowship (2002), the Chaires d'Excellence Pierre de Fermat (2008), and the Simons Fellowship in Mathematics (2015). A conference celebrating his 70th birthday was held in Zurich in 2019, highlighting his significant impact on the mathematical community.
Professor Varchenko has supervised numerous doctoral students, including Evgeny Mukhin and Vitaly Tarasov, with whom he has published extensively. His research collaborations span the globe, with visiting positions at the Max-Planck-Institute, IHES, ETH Zurich, and many other leading institutions. His teaching portfolio includes both undergraduate courses like Calculus and graduate courses on advanced topics such as Hypergeometric Functions and KZ Type Equations.
