Dr Alexander Taylor is a Lecturer in Psychology at Aberystwyth University's Department of Psychology, where he serves as Chair of the Psychology Department's ethics committee and as a Member of the University's research ethics panel. He holds a PhD in Psychology from the University of Reading, an MSc (hons) in Neuroscience from the University of Manchester, and a first-class BSc (hons) in Human Biology and Psychology from Staffordshire University. He is also completing a PGCTHE accredited by the Professional Standards Framework of the United Kingdom.
Dr Taylor's research focuses on affective neuroscience, cognition, ageing, Alzheimer's disease, mental health, neuroimaging, and neuropsychology. His primary research theme centers on the emotional and physical health of older adults, examining emotional and cognitive interactions through psychological and neural models. His recent work includes studies on deaf children's cognitive development using fNIRS, work with youth justice services, multimodal imaging of early-stage Alzheimer's and cerebrovascular disease at the Institute for Stroke and Dementia in Munich, and research on drugs targeting acid-sensing ion channels at the University of Southampton.
His publication record shows a consistent focus on cognitive neuroscience and aging, with particular emphasis on functional connectivity, mild cognitive impairment, and neural network efficiency. His most recent work explores anxiety's impact on postural control through CO2 challenge models and the effects of kombucha and prebiotics on cognitive and emotional management. His research has been widely cited, with his 2006 paper on theory of mind and empathy receiving over 800 citations.

Dr Taylor has secured significant research funding, including two Innovate UK projects running from 2023-2025/2026 investigating fermented foods for cognitive support and wellbeing, plus a British Psychological Society-funded project on wellbeing and smartphone use from 2021. His research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in health and wellbeing areas. He has also engaged with media outlets regarding his work on aging assessment, with coverage picked up by multiple news outlets and social media platforms.
