Professor Alexander Tartakovskii is a Professor of Solid State Physics and Director of the Near-field Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy Centre at the University of Sheffield's School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. His research focuses on semiconductor nano-structures, 2D materials, nano-photonics, polariton physics, and nano-magnetism. He leads the Inorganic Semiconductors Group, Low Dimensional Structures & Devices Research Group, and 2D Materials group. Tartakovskii teaches courses including Semiconductor Physics and Technology and Magnetic Resonance: Principles and Applications. He has coordinated major research initiatives, including two Marie Sklodowska Curie ITNs (totaling €8M) and secured £4.2M in EPSRC grants since 2017. His work bridges fundamental physics with applications in optoelectronics and nanophotonics, emphasizing strong light-matter interactions in 2D systems. Tartakovskii's contributions include pioneering studies on van der Waals heterostructures and exciton-polariton dynamics in monolayer semiconductors.
