Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheriesمعرفی
Dr. Alexander Sukhodolov serves as a Research Group Leader in the Department of Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) in Berlin, Germany. He has maintained a Senior Research Scientist position at IGB since 2000, establishing himself as a leading expert in environmental fluid mechanics with a specialization in fluvial systems.
Dr. Sukhodolov's research expertise spans environmental fluid mechanics with a focus on fluvial systems, including river-flow and estuarine hydrodynamics, aerodynamics of river valleys, and river turbulence through field and laboratory experiments. His work encompasses theoretical, experimental, and numerical research on shallow flows (confluences, lateral shear layers, vegetated shear layers, wakes behind exposed bars and vegetated patches), field experiments on transport processes (longitudinal dispersion, turbulent diffusion and effects of vegetation), theoretical and experimental studies in ecohydraulics (phytoplankton, flow effects on fish and invertebrates), and research on morphodynamics processes (flow in meander bends, bed-forms dynamics, and sedimentation in recirculating flows).
His extensive publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on river hydrodynamics with increasing attention to the impacts of human activities on river systems. Recent publications reveal a growing emphasis on geopolitical impacts on water resources, particularly regarding the environmental consequences of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on water infrastructure. His work consistently combines field measurements, laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling to investigate river processes across multiple scales.
Dr. Sukhodolov has led significant research projects including 'Transport and Mixing at River Confluences' (2014-2017) and the RIVER-LAB initiative, contributing to fundamental understanding of mixing processes and substance transport in river systems. His collaborative network is extensive and international, with frequent co-authorship with researchers such as Bruce L. Rhoads, Oleksandra Shumilova, George Constantinescu, and Tatiana Sukhodolova.
