Alexander Stewart Davies is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tartu's Department of Philosophy, part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. He holds dual roles as Director of the Philosophy MA/PhD programs and a core member of the Institute of Philosophy and Semiotics. His research focuses on linguistic context-sensitivity, pragmatics, and formal semantics, with notable work on slurs, Estonian semantics, and university bureaucracy.
Education includes a PhD in Philosophy from King's College London (2011), MPhil from the University of Cambridge (2007), and BA from the University of Cambridge (2006). Awards include the University of Tartu Lecturer of the Year (2020) and British Arts & Humanities Research Council funding (2007-2010).
Key research areas span epistemology of testimony, political philosophy of language, and formal semantics. Notable recent projects include 'The Role of Metacontexts in Stabilizing Text Content' (2024-2025), funded by the Estonian Research Council.
