Alexander Schramm is a Professor leading the research group in Molecular Oncology at the Department of Internal Medicine (Cancer Research), Faculty of Medicine, University of Duisburg-Essen. His work focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying therapy resistance in lung cancer through interdisciplinary translational approaches.
His research interests include:
- Molecular mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation
- EGFR- and ALK-dependent signal transduction in tumor cells
- Development and use of transgenic mouse models and patient-derived xenografts
- Translational immuno-oncology, particularly primary and secondary resistance to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB)
- Metabolic plasticity of tumor cells under stress conditions such as hypoxia and ROS
The research group actively participates in clinical trial-related translational projects and aims to identify predictive biomarkers and novel therapeutic strategies. They adhere to the 3R principles in animal research and utilize advanced in vitro models like 3D cultures and spheroids.
The group is supported by multiple prestigious funding bodies including the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) through SFB876 and GRK1739, Deutsche Krebshilfe, Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, EFRE.NRW, EU FP7, and several private foundations such as the Monika-Kutzner-Stiftung and 'Kampf dem Krebs'-Stiftung.
Alexander Schramm supervises a team of doctoral candidates and master’s students, including Moritz Görgen, Lisa Gustrau, Janina Janetzko, Jana Klümper, Anne Petzold, Leon Rudel, Paniz Salimitari, and Carolina Steinrücke. The lab also includes post-doctoral researchers and technical staff, indicating a robust and active research environment.
Laboratory and research activities are conducted at Hufelandstr. 55, 45122 Essen, within the University Hospital Essen infrastructure.
