Alexander Schmidt is the DAAD Visiting Associate Professor of European Studies at Vanderbilt University since January 2021. He specializes in the history of German political thought, focusing on intersections of human nature, legal theory, and aesthetics. His research spans early modern to modern eras, emphasizing Greek/Roman influences and critiques of natural law.
Education: PhD in Philosophy (2005) from Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany.
Research interests include the Enlightenment, history of human rights, and materialist moral philosophy. His work examines how ideas of 'might vs. right' shaped German political discourse. Publications include Vaterlandsliebe und Religionskonflikt (2007) and an upcoming monograph on natural law critiques. He has edited Schiller’s On the Aesthetic Education of Man for Penguin Classics.
Prior roles include teaching intellectual history at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and visiting positions at the University of Chicago, Cambridge, and Edinburgh. Current projects include a Schiller essays edition for Princeton University Press.
