Prof Alexander Samely is a Professor of Jewish Thought in the Department of Religions and Theology at the University of Manchester's School of Arts, Languages and Cultures. His research bridges ancient Jewish literature, philosophical inquiry, and textual hermeneutics. He led a major AHRC project on Jewish pseudepigrapha and co-edits the Studia Judaica series. Office hours include weekly in-person and virtual sessions.
Education: MA Philosophy (Frankfurt, 1985), MSt Jewish Studies (Oxford, 1984), DPhil Oriental Studies (Oxford, 1989). His work spans textual analysis, phenomenology of reading, and intercultural philosophy. Recent publications include a 2024 monograph on reading experiences and a 2023 analysis of genre in apocalyptic texts.
