Alexander Paulin is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley. He hails from the Highlands of Scotland and has dedicated his career to teaching and researching Mathematics.
- Education: Undergraduate at University of Cambridge, PhD in Number Theory at Imperial College London under Kevin Buzzard.
- Prior roles include Morrey Assistant Professor at UC Berkeley, Lecturer at the University of Nottingham, and Lecturer at King's College London.
His research focuses on number theory and geometry, particularly the p-adic and geometric aspects of the Langlands program. His work spans arithmetic geometry, algebraic geometry, p-adic analytic geometry, D-module theory, p-adic Hodge theory, motive theory, and higher category theory.
The two most recent articles (2011–2012) explore p-adic automorphic forms and geometric aspects of the Eigencurve within the Langlands framework. These works emphasize interdisciplinary connections between number theory, algebraic geometry, and representation theory.
He teaches courses such as Calculus 1B, Linear Algebra, and Abstract Algebra. His teaching philosophy stresses interactive learning, foundational understanding, and the importance of homework and discussion sections. Office hours are held daily at 796 Evans Hall.
