Alexander Motten is an Associate Professor of the Practice Emeritus of Biology at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from Duke University (1982) and has been affiliated with the institution since 1988, progressing through roles such as Lecturer, Assistant Professor of the Practice, and eventually attaining his current Emeritus status in 2016. His academic leadership includes serving as Co-Director of Undergraduate Studies in Biology (2013-2016).
His research focuses on plant reproductive biology, particularly investigating pollination ecology, mating systems, and evolutionary genetics in species like Erythronium and Datura stramonium. Key themes include inbreeding depression, floral morphology effects on outcrossing rates, and ecological speciation mechanisms in sympatric plant populations.
Teaching contributions include developing courses for continuing education programs such as the Basic Botany class at Duke Gardens and an OLLI course on flower natural history. His service includes editorial roles for journals like the South African Journal of Botany and peer review for Botany/Botanique and American Journal of Botany.
His publications emphasize experimental approaches to understanding plant reproductive success, with studies ranging from pollen tube growth analysis to population-level outcrossing determinants in self-fertilizing weeds.
