Professor Alexander McFarlane AO, at the University of Adelaide's Adelaide Medical School, is a leading international expert in traumatic stress and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His research spans epidemiology, neuroimaging, and cognitive deficits in PTSD, with over 250 publications. He directs the Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies and has held senior advisory roles in veterans' mental health, including the Australian Defence Force and Department of Veterans' Affairs.
Research Focus: McFarlane's work examines the longitudinal course of PTSD in military personnel, emergency services, and disaster victims. He investigates neurobiological mechanisms, affect processing, and treatment outcomes, alongside large-scale epidemiological studies like the MILHOP program on Australian veterans' health.
