Alexander Kirschel

Alexander Kirschel serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus' School of Natural and Applied Sciences, where his research integrates ecology, evolution, and animal communication to investigate avian song divergence and biodiversity dynamics.

His academic foundation includes a PhD from UCLA (2008), followed by postdoctoral positions at UCLA (2008-2010) and Oxford (2011-2012) as a Marie Curie Research Fellow. His faculty appointments progressed from Lecturer (2010-2015) to Assistant Professor (2015-2020) before achieving his current Associate Professor role.

Dr. Kirschel's work centers on biogeographic drivers of bird song variation, examining how environmental gradients and island-mainland dynamics shape vocal communication and speciation. His field studies across Mediterranean and African ecosystems combine bioacoustic analysis with genomic approaches, focusing particularly on tinkerbirds (Pogoniulus spp.) as model systems for evolutionary processes.

Recent publications (2021-2023) reveal consistent themes: genomic patterns of avian divergence, continent-wide song variation mechanisms, and conservation applications of bioacoustics. His research frequently addresses anthropogenic impacts through studies on habitat heterogeneity, invasive species, and disease ecology in Cyprus and beyond.
