Professor Alexander Khromykh is a Professor at the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, University of Queensland. He is Deputy Director of the Australian Infectious Diseases Research Centre and Director of a Global Virus Network Centre of Excellence. His research focuses on molecular virology, viral pathogenesis, and virus-host interactions, particularly studying RNA viruses like West Nile, Zika, and SARS-CoV-2. He has pioneered work on viral noncoding RNAs, vaccine development, and antiviral strategies. He leads a laboratory and holds significant grants, including NHMRC and ARC funding for studies on flavivirus evolution and SARS-CoV-2 variants.
Khromykh holds a PhD in Molecular Virology and a BSc from Tomsk State University. His work employs advanced techniques such as next-generation sequencing, cryo-EM, and deep mutational scanning. He is actively involved in supervising over 15 PhD and Master’s students, focusing on projects like sfRNA-NS5 interactions and SARS-CoV-2 evolution. His contributions extend to global health initiatives, including Zika and Ebola vaccine development.
Research outputs span vaccine platforms, viral immune evasion mechanisms, and neurotropism of SARS-CoV-2. He has published extensively in journals like Science Advances and Frontiers in Immunology, with over 200 peer-reviewed articles. His lab collaborates internationally on emerging infectious disease threats and translational medicine.
