Alexander Karsten

Alexander Karsten is an Instructor in the Department of Classical Studies at Duke University, affiliated with Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He holds a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MA from the University of Georgia, and a PhD from Duke University (2023). His research focuses on the Theognidea, a collection of ancient Greek poetry, and he has presented work on topics such as Theognis' Seal Poems and authorship ambiguity in Sulpicia’s poems.

Research Interests: Alexander specializes in ancient Greek and Latin literature, with a focus on classical philology, poetic authorship, and the intersection of text and historical context. His work explores themes such as ambiguity in classical poetry and literary techniques in ancient drama, as seen in his presentations on Terence’s Hecyra.

Teaching: He teaches a variety of courses in Greek and Latin language and literature, including intermediate and advanced Greek, Latin elementary and intermediate courses, and directed research programs. Recent courses include Survey of Greek Literature, Intermediate Greek for Graduate Students, and Elementary Latin.

Professional Activities: Alexander has presented at major conferences such as the CAMWS National Meeting and the SCS National Meeting, focusing on classical texts and their interpretive challenges.
