Alexander J. Gallan

Dr. Alexander J. Gallan is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Medicine (Nephrology) at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), serving as Director of Renal Pathology and Medical Director of the MCW Reference Laboratory and Electron Microscopy Laboratory. He specializes in renal and genitourinary pathology, particularly in kidney transplant pathology and the pathogenesis of glomerular diseases. His clinical practice focuses on providing diagnostic support to nephrologists and transplant teams across the Midwest.

Dr. Gallan completed his MD at Boston University School of Medicine (2013), followed by residency in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Chicago (2013-2017). He then pursued dual fellowships in Renal Pathology (2017-2018) and Genitourinary Pathology (2018-2019) at the University of Chicago. He is committed to medical education, mentoring residents and fellows in pathology and nephrology.

His research interests include complement system dysregulation in kidney diseases, molecular correlates of kidney cancer, and pathological markers of renal transplant rejection. His recent publications highlight advancements in diagnosing rare renal tumors, understanding post-vaccination glomerular disorders, and improving diagnostic accuracy through imaging-pathology integration.

Dr. Gallan actively collaborates with international registries like the IRocGN2 to investigate vaccine-induced glomerular diseases and develops cloud-based tools for renal histopathology analysis. He maintains affiliations with Froedtert Hospital and is a leader in MCW’s transplant pathology teams.
