Alexander J. Ashland serves as an Assistant Professor of English in the School of Humanities at Viterbo University, holding a PhD from the University of Iowa.
His research centers on nineteenth- and twentieth-century U.S. literature, with specialized expertise in media studies, visual culture, critical memory, print culture, and material textuality. He is currently developing a book project titled The Documentary Turn: U.S. Literature in the Age of Compromise, which establishes a prehistory of documentary aesthetics in mid-nineteenth-century America.
Scholarly output includes publications in the Iowa Journal of Cultural Studies and contributions to edited volumes such as The New Walt Whitman Studies and Ekphrasis in American Poetry, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement with literary history and visual media.
