Alexander Host is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, Pennsylvania State University. He holds a Dual Ph.D. in Philosophy & Comparative Thought and Literature from Johns Hopkins University (2021), an M.A. in Philosophy (2015), and a B.A. in Philosophy from Hamilton College (2013).
Research Interests:
- Kant and German Idealism
- Modern Philosophy (with focus on Spinoza)
- Ancient Philosophy (with emphasis on Plato)
- Philosophy of Religion
- Aesthetics
- Philosophy of Language (particularly Wittgenstein and ordinary language philosophy)
His current research explores metaphysical, theological, and ethical questions in Kant and Spinoza's philosophies, their influence on German Idealism, and the role of intuitive insight versus discursive thought. He examines the reappearance of the ontological argument in Schelling and Hegel after Kant's dismissal of it.
