Prof. Alexander Heisterkamp is a Full Professor of Biophotonics at the Leibniz University Hannover, affiliated with the Institute of Quantum Optics within the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. His research focuses on Biophotonics and Laser Medicine, with specialties in Ultrashort Laser Pulses, Nonlinear Optics, and Laser-based Imaging in Microscopy. He also explores Laser Manipulation of Cells and Tissues, including applications in optogenetics and laser surgery.
He holds a PhD (2002) and Diploma in Physics (1998) from Leibniz University Hannover. His academic journey includes roles as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University (2003–2004) and various professorships at Leibniz University and Friedrich Schiller University Jena. He currently leads research in advanced laser technologies for biomedical applications, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and biofilm analysis.
His professional roles include membership in the German Physical Society (DPG), German Technion Society, and leadership in Excellence Clusters like REBIRTH and Hearing4All. He has organized major conferences like SPIE Photonics West and contributed to optogenetic stimulation platforms, hydrogel-based sensors, and laser-induced tissue manipulation techniques.
Key projects include developing 3D imaging systems (e.g., Scanning Laser Optical Tomography), biocompatible hydrogel waveguides, and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing via laserporation. His work bridges physics and medicine, advancing therapies like corneal crosslinking and tissue engineering.
