Alexander Goehr (1932–2024), known as 'Sandy,' was Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge (Faculty of Music) from 1976 to 1999. Born in Berlin to a Jewish musical family, his father Walter Goehr was a conductor and composer, while his mother Laelia Rivlin was a pianist. He moved to England as a child and later studied composition, influenced by mentors like Michael Tippett and Olivier Messiaen. His academic career included posts at the Universities of Southampton and Leeds before his Cambridge appointment.
Research & Music: Goehr’s work spans opera, orchestral, choral, and chamber music, characterized by its intellectual depth and avoidance of rhetorical grandeur. Key works include Idées Fixes and VISION OF THE SOLDIER ER (String Quartet No. 5). His compositions often engage with philosophical and literary themes, such as Plato’s Republic.
Teaching & Legacy: Renowned as a teacher, Goehr emphasized the personal drive to create, blending humility with rigorous insight. His legacy includes fostering generations of composers and maintaining a vibrant connection to European modernist traditions. A 2022 concert at Cambridge celebrated his 90th birthday, highlighting his enduring influence.
