Professor Alexander G. Ophir is a faculty member at the College of Arts and Sciences, Cornell University, where he leads the Integrative Neuroethology Lab in the Department of Psychology. His research focuses on the proximate control and ultimate consequences of social behavior, utilizing prairie voles as a model to study oxytocin and vasopressin’s roles in pair bonding, aggression, paternal care, and socio-spatial cognition.
Research Interests:
- Nonapeptide hormones (oxytocin, vasopressin)
- Monogamy and mating strategies
- Behavioral neuroendocrinology
- Cognitive ecology
- Animal communication
Recent Articles (2024) examine epigenetic aging in pair bonding, paternal influences on development, gene expression shifts during motherhood, and hippocampal mediation of mating tactics. These works reflect his integrative approach combining field studies, molecular tools, and neuroanatomical manipulations.
Scientific Awards:
- NSF grant to study the social brain
- $2.5M recipient under A&S New Frontier Grants
Ophir’s lab emphasizes diversity, inclusion, and interdisciplinary collaboration, with research implications for social cognition, mental health, and evolutionary biology.
