Alexander G. Kemp is Professor of Petroleum Economics and Director of the Aberdeen Centre for Research in Energy Economics and Finance (ACREEF) at the University of Aberdeen Business School. With a distinguished career spanning over five decades, Professor Kemp has established himself as a leading authority in petroleum economics, particularly focusing on North Sea oil and gas development, taxation systems, and energy policy.
Professor Kemp earned his MA with First Class Honours in Economic Science from the University of Aberdeen (1958-1962), where he was awarded several prizes. His academic journey includes previous positions as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Reader at Aberdeen, following professional experience with Shell and academic appointments at the University of Strathclyde and University of Nairobi.
Professor Kemp's research focuses on petroleum economics with special reference to licensing and taxation issues in the oil and gas industry. His work examines the economic viability of North Sea developments, fiscal regimes, decommissioning economics, and the challenges of energy transition. He has pioneered analysis of marginal field development, cluster economics, and the impact of regulatory frameworks on investment decisions. His research bridges theoretical economic principles with practical industry applications, providing critical insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear evolution from traditional petroleum economics toward addressing contemporary challenges including energy transition, carbon pricing, and the economic implications of environmental regulations. While maintaining his focus on the UK Continental Shelf, his work increasingly addresses global energy challenges, resource governance, and sustainable development frameworks within the oil and gas sector.
